Are you wondering how to cope with a moody partner? Does your significant other’s attitude seem to change with the weather? Are you constantly walking on eggshells around them?
Moodiness isn’t just limited to women. Men’s attitudes and moods can fluctuate, too, although women usually get the notoriety. It can be extremely hard to deal with a moody partner and can actually take a mental and physical toll on you over time.
Sometimes, moodiness can be the result of a specific situation
If your partner is going through a particularly tough time at work or with their family then their feelings might be fragile and they could be prone to more frequent outbursts and sad spells. The good news is that if this is the case then it probably won’t last for long.
Being supportive to your partner and there when they need someone to talk to is about the best way that you can handle this. Once the situation has passed, you can generally count on your partner going back to “normal.”
If, however, this is a pattern for your partner and they frequently experience periods of moodiness then it might be hormonal or something chemical
This can be very frustrating and draining for you since you’re never sure what to say or do and, as the person closest to them, they take most of their anger and sadness out on you. In fact, it might put you in your own emotional whirlwind. You may find that you, yourself, are becoming increasingly sad or angry.
While you want to be supportive, you may even find that you need your own support system
Talking to a counsellor might be better than talking a friend in these situations since you don’t want to air your partner’s problems to someone that they have to see on a regular basis. If you feel as though your partner is being verbally, physically, or emotionally abusive to you at any time then you should definitely seek help from someone you trust. Although being supportive is important, it is imperative that you maintain your own mental health and happiness too.
Of course, it’s also vital to remember that men don’t always communicate in the same manner that women do. If you ask your partner what’s wrong and they don’t answer right away that doesn’t mean that they will never answer. You might just have to give them time and then be supportive when they do come to you.
